Last Friday produced an historic traffic backup on the Mountain Road in Stowe. Actually there were several jams last week, both coming from and going to the Mountain, but Friday morning was the biggest surprise.

The roads were in good shape and a lot of people got an early start only to find out that didn't help.

But traffic jams on the Mountain Road are nothing new. Last week I wrote about the first rope tow on Mount Mansfield, which opened on Feb. 7, 1937. Two weeks later Stowe hosted the U.S. Eastern Amateur Association Downhill championships on the Nose Dive. The race was to be held at Mt. Greylock in Massachusetts, but lack of snow moved the races to Stowe. Charlie Lord in his "Skiing Notes" recorded that the event drew an estimated 10,000 people, "the largest crowd ever assembled on the mountain resulting in a horrendous traffic jam."
