Peter R. Smith, 71, died peacefully at the University of Vermont Medical Center on Dec. 17, 2016, due to complications from a recent injury. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing.
He was born in Burlington Aug. 23, 1945, son of Romaine and Dorothy Smith of Stowe. He graduated in 1973 from Stowe High School, where he was president of the senior class and played baseball for two years.
After graduation from high school, he joined the family business in Stowe's lower village, Smith's Market. Following his father's passing, he took over the family business and ran it for many years.
In 1975 he decided to sell the business and join his friend Val LaMonda at Val's Market as a meat cutter. He continued his career as a meat cutter at the Stowe IGA for many years.
In addition to his years in the grocery business, he spent 35 years as the custodian at Stowe Free Library. Peter was involved in town government, including the planning and cemetery commissions, and spent several years as a volunteer firefighter with the Stowe Fire Department.
He had many hobbies, including painting, collecting fire department memorabilia, and crafting a miniature circus. He was also an avid Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed many trips to Fenway Park.
Peter dearly loved his family and friends and was always willing to help a friend in need. He lived in Stowe all his life and was well known around town.
He married Marcia Taylor of Burlington in 1971 in Stowe, and they lived in Stowe for 46 years.
Survivors include his wife; three children, Kevin Smith and wife Megan, Sarah McEdward and husband Allen, and Betsy Mickelsen and husband Zach; five grandchildren, Morgan, Reagan and Benjamin Smith, Louisa Mickelsen and Peri McEdward; a sister, Judy Smith; a sister-in-law, Jane Vincent and husband Peter; a brother-in-law, Lee Taylor and wife Cheryl; many nieces and nephews; and many loving friends.
He loved his family, he loved his friends, he loved life. He always stayed on the sunny side.
