Bill to block initial criminal history question becomes law

WCAX - 10:07 am Wed May 4th, 2016

A bill to "ban the box"- barring employers from asking about an applicant's criminal history on a job application form - has become law in Vermont.

Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin signed the bill Tuesday, with his office saying it will give those with criminal records a fair chance at a good job and reduce the risk of recidivism and incarceration.

Supporters have said the question still could be asked on an interview, but they wanted to lessen the chances that employers decline to interview someone based on a yes answer to the question about criminal convictions.
