Trevor Gaston, Louis LaRoche - Motor Vehicle Accident

Vt. State Police - 3:10 pm Sun Jul 12th, 2015

On 07/11/15, the Vermont State Police in Bradford responded to a report of
vehicle which had struck a utility pole on Scott Highway (US Route 302) in
Ryegate.

Prior to the arrival of the State Police there was another report that
a second vehicle had crashed in the same area.
Upon arrival, it was determined that Trevor Gaston was traveling east on Scott
Highway when he fell asleep. The vehicle traveled across the west bound lane and
off the north side of the roadway. The vehicle traveled perpendicular to the
roadway for a distance before colliding with a utility pole. The impact sheared
off the pole at ground level. The vehicle traveled for a short distance further,
striking some trees, and then coming to rest in a ditch.
The pole provided support for a utility pole directly across the road on the south side. The two poles were connected by cables. There were no power, phone, or cable lines connected to the pole which was sheared off. As a result of the collision the support cables were hanging very low above the east and west bound lanes.
The vehicle operated by Louis LaRoche was traveling east a short distance behind
Trevor Gaston. The vehicle struck the low hanging cables in the east bound lane.
Louis LaRoche's vehicle sustained minor damage along the driver's side A pillar
and windshield. A third vehicle traveling west caught the cable along the undercarriage, but did not sustain any reportable damage.
The utility pole off the south side was partially split as a result of the collision and leaning towards the roadway. This caused the next pole west to lean towards the road as well. The wires going across the road from the second leaning pole were hanging lower than normal above the west bound lane. The roadway was reduced to one lane as a result. The Ryegate Fire Department provided traffic control while Green Mountain Power repaired the damage.
Trevor Gaston was taken by family members to Cottage Hospital for evaluation. There were no other injuries reported.
