Grafton Historical Society Fund Raising Dinner Grafton Vermont

The Grafton Historical Society will hold a special fund raising dinner on June 24 at 6 p.m. at the White Chapel in Grafton, Vt., which will feature a presentation on the Connecticut River water power projects proposed for 2018.

The event will raise money to help operate its museum and restore the town's brick meeting house. It will also host the teachers from the Flow of History Summer Institute that will be held in Grafton the week of June 22. This will included about 20 teachers from around the state.

The dinner event will be open to the public. The dinner is $12 per person. Reservations are required as the seating space is limited to 60 people. Please make your reservations by June 19 by calling or e-mailing Maureen Fletcher at the Grafton Historical Society 843 2584 or grafthist@vermontel.net.

After the dinner, a speaker from the Connecticut River Watershed Council will make a presentation titled The Power of Water/The Power of Words which includes an art project it is developing with other organizations about the importance of the river to the Vermont southeast area as well as information about the proposed dam projects. This relates to the proposed federal and state relicensing of 5 hydroelectric facilities along the river, including one at Bellows Falls, near Grafton, and others at Wilder, and Vernon, VT., and Turners Falls and Northfield in northern Massachusetts.

The art project titled "Stream of Conscience" is to be a conduit to provide the thoughts and stories of local residents about the river to the state and federal governments involved in the hydro projects. The "Stream" will be made of torn pieces of cover-weight paper on which participators write their thoughts about the river. The pieces of paper will then be assembled to represent the river. It is hoped that the project will have an influence on state and federal decision makers in determining how the dam projects will be handled.
