House advances rent-to-own, other consumer protections

The Vermont House has approved a bill designed to crack down on what some see as abuses in the rent-to-own industry, as well as offering a range of other consumer protections.

The legislation sets new caps on the cash price merchants can charge for their wares, and calls for clearer consumer information on how the cost of a rent-to-own agreement compares with the cash price.

A spokesman for Rent-A-Center said Thursday that the company doesn't mind the disclosure requirements, but thinks price caps could hurt its ability to compete.
