Repeat Wildlife Offender Pleads Guilty to Another Charge Wolcott Vermont

posted at 3:08 pm Fri Nov 14th, 2014 by (WherezIt_Staff)

A man convicted of numerous wildlife violations in the past pled guilty on November 7 in Lamoille District Court to attempting to take deer by illegal means.

A recent investigation by Vermont game wardens found that Christopher Cochran, 35, of Wolcott, Vermont, had set heavy gauge wire snares along a well-worn deer trail in the woods behind his residence.

In Vermont, it is illegal to use snares to take or attempt to take deer. Mr. Cochran's snares were hung above the ground and were designed to close around the neck of a passing animal.

The wardens also found a concentration of crushed and whole apples on the ground near the snares, which appeared to be luring deer to the area.

Mr. Cochran has been convicted of other fish and wildlife violations in recent months:

  • On October 8, he was convicted for setting traps illegally and in closed season in Orleans County.
  • On October 27, he was convicted of shooting from a public highway in Orleans County.

Mr. Cochran was also charged with simple assault in 2009, in a case that was sent to diversion, for the non-fatal shooting of another hunter while turkey hunting.

Penalties received by Mr. Cochran for his recent wildlife violations total more than $2,000 in fines and court costs, and he has lost his hunting, fishing and trapping privileges for three years.
