Vermont Arts 2015
What does the Great Vermont Plein Air Paint-Out have in common with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra's Masterworks Series? How about Yellow Barn's Artist Residency Concert and Gregory Porter's performance at the Flynn?

All of these events are a part of Vermont Arts 2015. This year-long celebration will highlight the stunning array of arts events, concerts, festivals, exhibits, and openings all across the state. Next year marks 50 years of public funding for the arts in Vermont, and we can't think of a better way to commemorate this milestone than shining a light on the richness of arts in Vermont! We want you to join in. Find out more...
Poetry Out Loud: Sign Up Now!
It's time to register for Poetry Out Loud. Last year this national recitation program attracted 44 schools from 12 Vermont counties and more than 5,000 students. According to Ben Doyle, Arts Council education programs manager and producer of Vermont Poetry Out Loud, "Last year we had a record number of student participants, the finals were held at PBS Vermont and aired throughout the state, and our state winner,

Sam Boudreau, skillfully represented us at the national competition in Washington, D.C. We want to keep the momentum going in 2015. Our goal is to have 45 schools participate and beat our 2014 record for total student participation."

The deadline for registration is December 3, and can be completed online. Teachers and school administrators are welcome to contact Ben about getting involved with Poetry Out Loud. There are also a number of resources on the Poetry Out Loud page of our website. To see first hand what a life-changing experience Poetry Out Loud is for students, you can watch the 2014 finals online.
"Etudes: the weavings of Bhakti Ziek" in the Spotlight Gallery
The current show in the Spotlight Gallery, a collection of intricate woven wall hangings, is called "Etudes."  Artist Bhakti Ziek describes the weavings
Detail from "Singularity"
as "reflections of places in my inner world-a place of abstraction, words, and light. They connect to the outer world and its terrain, but are not referential to any specific place or time."

In her weavings, Ziek  often imbeds ideas from historical textiles. She embraces both the traditions of narrative textiles and current technology, weaving by hand but with a loom connected to a computer and an air compressor. "It is sort of like having one foot in the past and one foot in the present," she says.

Read more about "Etudes: the weavings of Bhakti Ziek." The exhibit can be seen in the Council's Spotlight Gallery Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 4:30 from November 3 through December 30, 2014. A reception for the artist will be held during the Montpelier ArtWalk on December 5 from 4-7 p.m.

Rural Development will offer a workshop to present information about its loan guarantees, loans, and grants to municipalities and nonprofits for capital expenditures. The workshop will also cover the agency's application process, as well as the new census data and its impact on our communities.
