Coalition wants to bring Vermont prisoners home

A new coalition of Vermont groups says nearly 500 inmates housed in private prisons out of state should be brought back to be closer to their families.

But Corrections Commissioner Andy Pallito says there simply isn't room for them in Vermont's prisons, and the cash-strapped state isn't looking to build a new lockup.

Groups ranging from the American Civil Liberties Union's Vermont chapter to the Vermont Workers' Center have urged lawmakers recently to reduce Vermont's prison population enough to house it all at in-state facilities.
