Bill Dunnington: On creating a more sustainable economy

As Tom Pelham, VTDigger and others have pointed out, Vermont's legislators face a major budget challenge for the foreseeable future - this the result of having increased spending faster than the economy has been growing.

The current fiscal year's General Fund budget started at roughly $1.4 billion, but was cut by $31.3 million in August after the state's economists downgraded Vermont's revenue forecast. These lowered revenue expectations are exacerbated by other spending pressures:
